Fire Prevention Bureau

The Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for fire safety inspections in what is known as life hazard use buildings, local businesses, non-owner occupied one and two family homes, as well as multiple dwellings. The bureau conducts approximately 2,200 inspections per year with additional re-inspections of those businesses and dwellings found to be in violation of the New Jersey state fire code.

The Fire Department suppresses the fire. The Fire Prevention Bureau then conducts a Cause and Origin Investigation. The Fire Prevention Bureau is empowered by State statute/law to enforce the International Fire Code, New Jersey Edition.

Fees are collected as per the NJ state fire code.

What is the definition of non-owner occupied?
Simply put, it is a one or two family structure which the owner rents but does not reside.

What type of fire extinguisher should I have?
An ABC fire extinguisher will be effective on all types of home fires if used with proper knowledge.
